After Effects File

February 3, 2010 · Leave a Comment

my plan:

1. Why this particular song/piece? This song I feel works well with my images, it has several different beats but it isn’t too over whelming
2. how does this song effect your color scheme – why? The music video has similar colors, and it’s more upbeat which is similar to my images
3. why your using this specific set of images and how does it effect the
content of the movie. (music choice, historical, symbolic, etc.) I’m using these images because I feel the represent a “rave” which is a common activity people do and a place to go when they want to listen to techno music.

4. what do you hope the viewer’s experience is? (emotional, political,
etc.) I hope they feel the sense of being absorbed into the music and feel as though they are at a “rave”

I did a series playing with light at night time and selected one image that I felt represented techno fairly well and played with the different lines

Techno Sketches

January 21, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Mind you, these are just drawn up sketches. I’ll be doing this in illustrator then moving to photoshop.

There will be a trenchcoat that moves with the tempo of the song. Then the colored lines behind it will each represent a certain rhythm and change as the song changes sounds.

Techno/Trance Research

January 20, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Techno was created in the early 80s when three high school friends Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson were influenced by dance parties and radio DJs. The three boys called themselves 3070, but released records as Cybotron in 1981. In Chicago and New York, house music was taking a similar path. Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles, Ron Hardy, and other DJs were spinning synthesizer-driven dance music and creating their own edits and mixes. Techno and house, which had failed to gain mainstream success in the United States, became a huge phenomenon in Europe—especially in Great Britain. In fact, the term techno was popularized by Virgin Records’ seminal UK compilation Techno! The New Dance Sound Of Detroit.

Trance is a style of electronic dance music that developed in the 1990s. Trance music is generally characterized by a tempo of between 130 and 155 BPM, short melodic synthesizer phrases, and a musical form that builds up and down throughout a track. It is a combination of many forms of electronic music such as industrial, techno, and house. The origin of the term is uncertain, with some suggesting that the term is derived from the Klaus Schulze album Trancefer (1981) or the early trance act Dance 2 Trance. In any case, the name is undoubtedly linked to the perceived ability of music to induce an altered state of consciousness known as a trance.

My Idea

I plan on using shapes and colors related to the “Techno” genre such as curves and lines as well as bright colors to move with the beat flowing in and out. This will create a 3 dimensional feel to the flat shapes causing the viewer to become a part of the piece.

Tic Final Panels

November 30, 2009 · Leave a Comment

With the words North and South, I immediately thought of climate change. I took that into the saturation change of the images representing cool to warm. My character story continues in its exploration of new things. I started with black and white, moving towards the metallics keeping the cooler feel. Then I used transparency as sort of a transitional piece, then to expressive line since that sort of feel into place making my final piece florescent. My final panel is florescent to represent the warmest climate.

It’s gender is unknown, trying to adapt to human life as it spends its time on earth its physical characteristics act like a chameleon, taking what it sees and changes its body to match ours. Its name is Tic. It is a narcissist and falls more and more in love with itself as its body changes. It has a curious personality who will adventure into any situation. Humans ignore it, since to them it appears as a sculpture, or a child changing with the fast paced trend towards futuristic clothing with angles and bizarre colors and shapes. It watches everyone move, the way they gesture their hands to the way they walk. It takes a moment to mimic the human it sees in order to understand human life better. To it, humans are an unusual species and life on earth is an observation; similar to the way humans observe and examine various animal species. It means no harm; it is gentle with everything and carefully moves its way towards things on Earth; much like a child observing a bird, or something new to it. Tic intends on never leaving Earth, it will slowly gain human features in her quest to fit in.
